Most clients never scroll past the map. When someone searches "personal injury lawyer Mississauga" or "family lawyer near me," the three firms in the Map Pack get the call before the ten blue links below them get a second look. Ranking there is not luck, and it is not the same job as ranking in classic organic search.
The three factors Google actually uses
Google has confirmed the Map Pack runs on three signals, and every tactic below exists to move one of them:
- Relevance. How well your profile and website match what the searcher typed, down to the specific practice area and city.
- Distance. How close your registered business address is to the searcher, or to the city named in the search.
- Prominence. How well-known and well-reviewed Google judges your firm to be, based on reviews, citations, links and offline reputation signals it can find.
You cannot move distance without a real office. Relevance and prominence, on the other hand, respond directly to the work below.
Google Business Profile checklist
This is the highest-leverage single asset in local SEO for a law firm. Work through it in order:
- Primary category. Pick the most specific match ("Personal Injury Attorney," not just "Lawyer" or "Attorney"), then add secondary categories for every practice area you actually handle.
- Services list. Add every service Google's law firm service list supports for your category, described in the client's own words, not internal legal terminology.
- Service areas. List every city and neighbourhood you genuinely serve, not a generic radius. This is what lets one firm compete across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Vaughan without a branch office in each.
- Photos. Real office, team and signage photos outperform stock images for both ranking and click-through. Add new ones monthly.
- Posts and Q&A. Weekly posts and a seeded Q&A section signal an active, maintained profile, which factors into prominence.
- Booking and messaging. Enable direct messaging and a booking link so clients who find you in the Map Pack can act immediately, before they check a competitor.
Reviews and citations move the needle most
Prominence is mostly reviews, and reviews are mostly a process problem, not a marketing problem. Firms that ask every closed file for a review, at the right moment and through the right channel, consistently outrank firms with better websites and thinner review counts. Every review request has to stay inside Law Society of Ontario advertising rules: no incentives, no payment for reviews, no cherry-picking only favourable outcomes.
Citations, meaning your firm's name, address and phone number listed consistently across legal directories, the provincial law society directory and local business listings, back up what your Google Business Profile claims. Inconsistent NAP data across even a few directories measurably slows Map Pack movement.
What Map Pack rank actually looks like
Two documented examples from our own client work show the range: Cloudhaus Law, a franchise and MSB firm in Richmond Hill, reached a 1.00 average rank for "franchise lawyer Toronto", meaning it holds the top Map Pack position for that search essentially every time it is run. Maana Law, a Mississauga personal injury firm, reached a 2.16 average rank for "truck accident lawyer Mississauga" within four months of a full Google Business Profile rebuild and review campaign. Neither result came from a shortcut. Both came from working every item on the checklist above, consistently, for months.
The takeaway: the Map Pack rewards a complete, active, well-reviewed Google Business Profile more than it rewards a prettier website. Fix the profile first.
Where this fits with the rest of your SEO
Map Pack work is one part of local SEO for law firms, which also covers citation building and review strategy in more depth. It compounds with technical SEO and legal schema, and increasingly with AI search visibility, since Google's AI Mode leans on the same Business Profile data for local queries.
