Google AI Overviews and AEO: How Law Firms Show Up in the AI Answer

Google increasingly answers a legal search with an AI summary before any firm is listed. Here is how your firm gets cited inside that summary.

Search a legal question on Google today and you often see an AI Overview at the very top: a written answer that cites a handful of sources, sitting above the Map Pack and the organic results. For law firms this changes the goal. It is no longer enough to rank on page one. You want to be one of the sources the AI answer is built from. The practice of earning that placement is called Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO.

What AEO actually is

AEO is optimizing your content so an answer engine, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, can extract a clear, correct answer from your page and cite you as the source. Traditional SEO earns a ranking position. AEO earns a place inside the answer itself. The two overlap heavily, but AEO puts extra weight on clarity, structure and factual precision.

What Google's AI Overview looks for

  • A direct answer, stated early. The engine lifts the sentence that answers the query most cleanly. If your page opens with that sentence, you are a candidate. If the answer is buried, you are not.
  • Question-shaped headings. Headings phrased the way clients ask ("How long do I have to file a claim in Ontario?") map directly onto the queries the overview is answering.
  • Supporting structure. Short paragraphs, lists and tables let the engine parse your point without ambiguity.
  • Trust signals. Author identity, LSO-aware accuracy, structured data and corroboration from other sources all raise the odds the engine trusts your page enough to cite it.

The GrowMinion AEO framework for law firms

1. Map the real questions

We start from the questions your clients actually type and ask, by practice area and city, not from a generic keyword list. Each becomes a heading with a direct answer beneath it.

2. Answer first, then explain

Every section leads with the answer in one or two plain sentences, then adds the detail, the exceptions and the Ontario-specific context. This is the single most important AEO habit, and the one most law firm websites get wrong.

3. Add FAQ and legal schema

We wrap the questions in FAQ schema and pair it with LegalService and Attorney markup, so the engine reads your answers as structured data rather than guessing.

4. Earn corroboration

AI Overviews favour sources that agree with the wider web. Reviews, directory listings and, where relevant, news features reinforce that your answers are trustworthy.

Does AEO cannibalize your clicks?

It is a fair worry: if Google answers the question, does anyone click? For law firms the answer is reassuring. Legal matters are high-stakes and personal. People read the AI summary, then click through to a firm they trust to actually handle their case. Being the cited source in the overview is what earns that click, and the client arrives already viewing you as the authority.

The takeaway: AEO is not a separate discipline bolted onto SEO. It is disciplined, answer-first content plus structured data plus corroboration, aimed at the AI answer instead of just the ranking.

Where to start

Rewrite your top three practice-area pages answer-first, add FAQ schema, and clean up your Google Business Profile and entity signals. From there, AI search optimization and SEO for lawyers reinforce the same foundation. We can audit how your firm currently appears in AI Overviews on a free call.

Frequently asked questions

SEO earns your firm a ranking position in the list of results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) earns your firm a citation inside the AI-generated answer that now sits above those results. They share a foundation, but AEO puts extra weight on answer-first content and structured data.
For law firms the impact is limited. Legal matters are high-stakes, so clients read the AI summary and then click through to a firm they trust to handle the case. Being the cited source is what earns that qualified click.
Answer the client's question directly in the first line of the relevant section, use question-shaped headings, add FAQ and legal schema, and build corroboration through reviews and reputable listings.
